Before You Book

Requirements for the Road Test

Bring the right documents and a safe vehicle. Missing items can mean a $50 charge and no test that day.

These requirements follow Michigan Department of State third-party testing rules. When SOS instructions change, SOS rules control.

1Under 18 Requirements

If you are under 18, you must bring:

  • Level 1 Learner's License (must have been issued for at least 6 months).
  • Segment 2 certificate of completion.
  • Current registration for your vehicle.
  • Current proof of insurance for your vehicle.
  • Driving log of at least 50 hours with a licensed adult 21 or older, including at least 10 hours at night.
  • Parent or legal guardian must accompany teens during the test. No one else is permitted in the vehicle — including children.

Students may take the road test at age 15 if all requirements are met; they cannot obtain the license until age 16.

218 and Over Requirements

If you are 18 or older and do not have a license from another country, bring:

  • Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) — must be issued for at least 30 days, or must say "waive 30 days".
  • Current registration for your vehicle.
  • Current proof of insurance for your vehicle.

3Foreign License Requirements

If you are 18 or older and have a license from another country, bring:

  • White receipt from the Secretary of State.
  • Home country license.
  • Current registration for your vehicle.
  • Current proof of insurance for your vehicle.

No one else is permitted in the vehicle besides the person taking the road test and the examiner, unless an interpreter is needed. The interpreter must be provided by the customer.

4Vehicle Inspection

You must bring a vehicle for the road skills test — CD Driver Testing does not provide a vehicle. The following equipment cannot be damaged, inoperative, or missing:

Brakes
Horn
Speedometer
Springs
Tires and lug nuts
Exhaust system (muffler)
Wipers and washer fluid
Windshield — cannot be cracked or damaged
Lights — headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and center high-mounted brake light if equipped
Turn signals
Mirrors — rearview and outside left
Seats with seatbelts for all occupants; all driver and passenger doors must open from inside and outside

If your vehicle does not pass inspection, you will not be allowed to test and you will be charged $50.

5Rules and Regulations

  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete paperwork. Example: a 10:00am appointment means arrive by 9:50am. Arriving 15 minutes late means you will not be tested (and the $50 late fee applies).
  • Provide all required documentation listed on this page.
  • If you are under 18, bring a parent or legal guardian — and no one else.
  • If you are under 18, show a log of at least 50 hours of driving (10 night hours) with a licensed adult 21 or older.
  • Your vehicle must be roadworthy and pass the vehicle inspection above.
  • To cancel or reschedule, you must contact our office at least 48 hours in advance during appointment office hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm).
